Patch 1.59 is the version of the first Hordes of the Underdark release. Patch 1.32 is the version of the Gold Edition. Patch 1.30 is the version of the first Shadows of Undrentide release. Version 1.10 was the original English-language release.
Some notable patch numbers are the following. On Linux and Macs, there is only one option for updating the game, one that is comparable to the critical rebuild for Windows. (Links to the critical rebuilds are included at the end of this article.) The disadvantage of the critical rebuild is that the player must manually find, download, and execute the patch.

The critical rebuild has the advantage that the same patch is used regardless of current game version, and it is now a smaller download in most cases. The more involved method to patch the game is the "critical rebuild", which includes all changes made since the game's (or latest expansion's) release. Consequentially, BioWare has stopped hosting the auto-update patch files for upgrading from all but the most recent patches (1.67 or 1.68). However, since this method used a file format with additional overhead, this is now the method with the larger download in most cases. Until the later patches, this method also involved a smaller download, as it requires downloading only what has changed since the currently-installed version. The simpler method, called "auto-updating", is to use the updater utility ( nwupdate.exe), accessible from the game's opening menu (alongside the choices "Play", "Toolset", etc.). On the Windows platform, there are two ways to patch the game.
The version number of the game's current patch is displayed in the upper-left corner of the startup screen as well as in the upper-right corner of the options menu in the game client. Patches had been released at irregular intervals since the game's release, but barring unforseen and extraordinary circumstances, the final patch is version 1.69, released 9 July 2008. Patches to the Neverwinter Nights game fix bugs and sometimes add content and capabilities.
